Wellness Journal
This month, the VCU Wellness Committee will formally be launching a new initiative called the Online Wellness Journal. It is intended to be a space where students can express themselves through any medium of art they choose (i.e. painting, poetry, spoken word, etc.) as well offer a space for students to share their own stories and experiences. The VCU Wellness Committee will also be sharing blog posts with resources that address burnout, resilience, wellness and well-being. Our goal is to provide a virtual space to uplift and empower student voices at MCV while further strengthening our sense of community. The posts that students share can be made anonymously or under a pseudonym; we want to facilitate a student-run open forum where individuals can freely share their thoughts, stories and experiences. Please submit your pieces here <https://forms.gle/UmjksRY2gPnt5CGKA> and be sure to check out our first post at https://vcusomwellness.wordpress.com/.
Announcements from the Weekly Scoop
Sunday, February 21st
AMSA 71st Annual Convention. AMSA is having their annual convention on March 6-8. It will be virtual again this year due to COVID. We're excited to bring medical students together at this particular time for professional training, networking, and activism on Capitol Hill. Our diverse line-up of speakers and activities we've organized includes keynotes and sessions by game-changers and thought leaders like gun violence victim and advocate, Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, of the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; Mama Doctor Jones (OB/GYN Dr. Danielle Jones), a social media trailblazer in medicine; and Joel Foster from Health Care for America. Also past of the agenda: hands-on professional and clinical training opportunities, including the Virtual Patient challenge. You can register for the convention here.
Physician Advocacy for the Underserved Non-Clinical Elective. Leadership Application; due February 28th at 11:59pm. For current M3s (c/o 2022): Physician Advocacy for the Underserved (PAFU) is a non-clinical elective that is available for January (block 10) of your M4 year. It is a student-led course that includes a physician advocacy and leadership curriculum, with the goal of teaching the importance and skills of calling attention to patient health issues. Included will be relevant community health experiences to prepare students to face and challenge systemic barriers to health as future physicians. To lead the course, two rising M4s are needed. Brief layout of the course involves week 1 being all remote work, and weeks 2-4 being in person 3 days/week (Mo-Wed). The preceptor of the course is Dr. Mark Ryan. If you are interested in the leadership position, please fill out this form! Applications are due by the end of February. Please email either of the previous student co-leaders, <trikantzopoue@vcu.edu> or <husainm@vcu.edu>, with any questions.
The Stall Seat Journal Goes Digital. The dedicated team of professionals and students who contribute to the Stall Seat journal are excited to share digital versions, along with the text-only document, of the current campus-wide editions. These editions are currently readable in many of our bathroom stalls across campus. However, we know that many of our students, faculty, and staff are learning remotely this semester. We wanted to make sure that everyone has access to this important reading material (whether you choose to read them in the bathroom or not is completely up to you). Please share these within your networks. All of our campus-wide editions can also be viewed virtually through ISSUU. If you would like to connect with The Well this semester, please visit our website or email us thewell@vcu.edu.

Food Drive for Latinx Communities. The Sacred Heart Center is a non-profit organization in Richmond that works with Latinx families in the city, providing ESL classes, health screenings, childcare, and more. Currently they are operating a drive-through food bank serving the Latinx community. They need volunteers to help with completing intake forms for new families, packaging food, organizing donations, and loading food into the families' cars. It's open Monday through Thursday at 1400 Perry St in Richmond, with shifts lasting 2 hours. Spanish fluency is not required; those who do not speak Spanish will be paired with someone who does. If interested, sign up using this link. Contact mcvlmsa@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Project ACE. Project ACE is starting back, and SNMA at VCU is looking for medical students with availability to serve as mentors from 3:30 - 4pm every Friday starting January 22nd – March 26th. This is a wonderful and rewarding way to make a difference in our community by mentoring high school students in the Richmond area and an opportunity to possibly inspire younger mentees to pursue a career in healthcare! Please access the sign-up sheet here. There will be various, weekly workshops focused on exploring clinical skills, writing, and book discussions. If you have any questions, please reach out to Tanner Nelson, VP of Academics for SNMA, at nelsont2@mymail.vcu.edu.
